In EMS and medical transport scenarios, professionals worry about the limited life of their oxygen tanks. This fear of your oxygen supply being depleted is often referred to as "tank anxiety".

The Oxygen Waste Problem

Patients only inhale during approximately 40% of the breath cycle. Therefore, approximately 60% of oxygen through a mask or nasal cannula is wasted. This means that while oxygen is being supplied at a constant rate, only 40% of that oxygen is being used by the patient. A major portion of the oxygen in your tanks is being wasted when using a cannula or mask.

The Solution: The Sovant

The Sovant provides “Synchronized Flow” oxygen delivery, which synchronizes oxygen delivery with inhalation and stops oxygen flow during exhalation, reducing oxygen usage by 60%. According to a recent study, oxygen savings greater than 60% are possible with synchronized flow provided by the Sovant even at high flow rates and lower respiratory rates, with savings as high as 70% observed. Oxygen savings using this method were never observed to be less than 56%. See Figure 1 below.

For example, if an oxygen tank at constant flow lasts 30 minutes, using the Sovant will extend that supply life to 1.25-3 hours. This means that longer transports and prolonged patient care are possible on a single oxygen tank.

Oxygen flow can often be left on in between patients or overnight which quickly depletes an oxygen tank. Since the Sovant detects patient breaths, oxygen will no longer be wasted even if oxygen is accidentally left on.

When the oxygen supply begins to run low, the Sovant will alert you that a new/refill tank will be needed.

Oxygen is expensive as is the time/delivery costs to refill those tanks. Using the Sovant will reduce your oxygen and refill costs, saving you time and money.

However, when the Sovant turns off oxygen during exhalation, the quality of the CO2 waveform is clean and usable, even at higher flows. This is another way to monitor your patient's respiratory status that is typically unusable without the Sovant.
• • Improved Patient Comfort: Constant-flow supplemental oxygen is typically uncomfortable for patients. With the Sovant, synchronizing oxygen delivery with a patient's natural breathing does not dry out nasal passages, even at high flows.
